At Okinawa World's Ryukyu Kingdom Castle Town, you can participate in various traditional Okinawan craft experiences. These traditional techniques, passed down from the Ryukyu Kingdom era (1429-1879), are taught by experienced artisans. From beginners to children, everyone can easily participate and complete beautiful works.
The appeal of these programs is that you don't just observe - you "create" with your own hands, gaining deeper understanding of Okinawan culture. The pieces you make become precious travel souvenirs. Through the creation process, you'll also learn about the aesthetic sensibilities of Ryukyu Kingdom-era people and how Okinawa's unique natural environment influenced its culture.
Most experiences don't require advance reservations - simply sign up on-site the day of your visit. However, popular programs may fill up in the afternoon, so we recommend registering at workshops promptly after entering the park, especially on weekends, holidays, and during summer vacation.
Available Experience Programs
Okinawa World offers the following variety of experience programs. Below we detail each program's features, costs, and duration.
Popular Experience Programs
1. Ryukyu Glassmaking
Ryukyu glass is glasswork that began in Okinawa in the late Meiji period. Initially made by melting and reusing imported glass bottles, impurities mixed in created the distinctive colors and bubbles that became characteristic of Ryukyu glass. After WWII, using empty bottles from U.S. military bases to make glass products helped develop it into a full-fledged industry.
Today, its simple and warm texture is valued as "Ryukyu glass character," making it a representative Okinawan traditional craft. Vibrant colors, thick glass texture, and internal bubbles are all part of Ryukyu glass's charm.

With expert artisan guidance, even first-timers can confidently try. Holding the blowpipe and blowing air to expand the glass is an indescribable moment. You can create glasses, small bowls, vases, and various shapes.

2. Shisa Painting & Making
Shisa are traditional Okinawan guardian lion-dogs placed at home entrances and on roofs to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. The name "shisa" comes from the Okinawan dialect word for "lion." Believed to repel evil and invite blessings, they're cherished by Okinawan households today.
Shisa come in pairs - the open-mouthed "male" placed on the right, and closed-mouth "female" on the left. Males are said to drive away evil spirits while females invite fortune. Expressions vary from dignified to charming to unique, reflecting the maker's individuality.

3. Bingata Dyeing
Bingata is traditional Okinawan dyeing technique passed down from Ryukyu Kingdom days. Characterized by vivid colors and bold patterns, it was once restricted to royal and aristocratic clothing as noble dyework. "Bin" means all colors and "gata" means various patterns - referring to the technique of combining multiple colors and patterns.
Bingata's feature is first applying resist paste using stencils, then layering colors on top. Clear outlines and South-Seas-inspired vivid colors are its charm. Many designs use plants, animals, and geometric patterns reflecting Okinawan nature and culture.

4. Indigo Dyeing
Indigo dyeing is traditional Japanese dyeing technique found nationwide, but Okinawan indigo has unique characteristics. Okinawa uses "Ryukyu indigo" - natural indigo dye from the plant "Ryukyu ai" (Strobilanthes cusia), different from mainland indigo (Persicaria tinctoria).
